Outlook Express places everything in the INBOX if you would like mail to goto the proper folder then you need to filter it. Outlook refers to this as RULES. If you are getting spam the best way is to filter the spam right in to your trash bin.  Filtering mail is handy feature to saving you time on reading your mail.

Adding Rules (filter) in Outlook Express 5.0

1. Click on TOOLS then scroll too MESSAGE RULES then click MAIL

2. In this box you need to decide what you want to filter. In the top box you select what to look for. In most cases you will probably only the check one of the first 2.  If you click the FROM line it looks for who the message came from. If you click the SUBJECT box it then looks for the subject in the message.

In box 2 you can  MOVE it to a folder. If it moves it to a folder it will delete it from the in box. If you COPY it. Then it will keep 1 in the In box and another in the folder. If you choose to DELETE it then its gone. Great for spam. Or you can Forward it to other e-mail accounts. If you have a hotmail account then you can forward your mail here. If you left your outlook express open and never turned off your computer then all mail will be sent here. Allowing you access to it while your away.

Give the rule a name (Junk Mail)

3. The third box simply tells us what we selected.  Under Rules Description.

4. By click CONTAINS PEOPLE in the third box Rule Description it pops up with this box. We can add names from the address book or type e-mail address's in here.

5. By clicking SPECIFIED folder we can direct where we want to the mail sent too.

We are done making a rule. Keep in mind this is just and example. The possiblities are endless. You could filter certain News Letters to one box. You could filter certain email accounts. If anyone sends you a message for this acount have it foward it off somewhere else. Takes a little practice but well worth learning how to do.
