Removing Dial Up Prompts
Customer used to use a modem and dialup to an ISP. Now when they try to access @Home, they continue to be
prompted for a dialup connection. User is using Internet Explorer 4.0+ version of our browser or Netscape.
Solution:
Here are the steps to disable the Auto Dial window: Step 1: Dialup Networking
A) Open My Computer B) Open Dialup NETWORKING C) From the CONNECTIONS menu - select SETTINGS. D) Change this from PROMPT TO USE Dialup NETWORKING to DON'T PROMPT TO USE Dialup NETWORKING .
E) Click OK and close Dialup Networking. F) Open Control Panel . G) Open Internet - Continue on step 2.
Step 2: Internet Connection ( Internet Applet ) A) Choose the CONNECTION Tab at the top. B)
Select the Connection method to "CONNECT TO THE INTERNET USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK" . C) Click APPLY So the LAN setting takes effect.
Step 3: Confirming the LAN settings with the CONNECTION WIZARD
. NOTE: There are a lot of varieties of the INTERNET control panel applet. If the CONNECTION WIZARD doesn't show at the top - they might want to run the @HOME IE 4 installation - as this version DOES include
this applet that supports the wizard.
A) Same tab as step 2 - Click on the "Connect..." button for the wizard at the top. B) Select the SECOND option: I have an existing Internet account
through my phone line or a local area network (LAN). Help me set up my computer to connect to this Internet account. C) CHOOSE: Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet service
provider or a local area network (LAN). D) CHOOSE: Connect using my local area network (LAN). E) Say YES to using a PROXY server. F) Setup the HTTP proxy as PROXY and the port as 8080 .
G) Just hit NEXT for the exceptions. H) Say NO to the next 3 screens - these are to setup an E-MAIL account, NEWS account, and DIRECTORY SERVICE account - the first two you may setup if it applies to the call.
G)Answer OK to these windows & close down the control panel - reboot.
There is a version of Netscape 3.0 which has its OWN built in auto-dial features. These are not disablable, nor does the 4.5
upgrade fix this problem. These are isolated however, please have them contact Netscape.
Additional note from Eckhard Saschenbrecker at Cox: By renaming a file called 'Url.dll' to 'Url.bak', you will not
get the dialup settings reset after rebooting your computer. Some customers have had a CSR reset the settings and everything works fine, only to have it all reset to dialup mode after a
shutdown. This will solve the reset problem.
NOTE: DO NOT do this for IE. IE Depends on the integrity of this file, please ONLY if they are going to use Netscape.
DUN will not save settings without this file intact. |
